While on vacation, successful private investigator Sabina Swift attends the 20th-anniversary meeting of the Champlain Valley Physics Institute near Burlington, Vermont, with her physicist husband and her youngish employee, Victor Newman. There, someone poisons egotistical Nobel Prize-winner Herve Moore-Gann (a.k.a. Harvey Morgan), but not before narrator Victor notices various quarrels, suspicious-looking foreigners, and odd-natured employees. In this first novel, Sucher clothes her serious-minded microcosm in singularly passionless, dry prose, but the final result is basically sound.
