Mystery novelist Sarah Flynn is simultaneously training to run in a local marathon and working on a new thriller whose heroine is also training for a marathon. Sarah has three teenage children from a previous marriage and has recently rewed.
While, as a new bride, Sarah is trying to juggles her children, her work, and her marriage, things begin to disappear from the house-a wedding photograph, the calendar on which the household's daily schedules are noted, and the carbon copy of her novel-in-progress. When the family pet is killed, Sarah becomes convinced of a teriifying truth: she and those she loves are being stalked by a psychopath.
One dark dawn, as she is running the derserted streets of her neighborhood,Sarah is chased by a car that tries to kill her-a scene she has written in her novel. She realizes that whoever stole her manuscript now intends to act out the final chapter of her book, in which the heroine is shot as she crosses the finish line. Only does Sarah understand that running in the marathon is the one means she has of discovering the identity of the perosn who has plunged her life into terror.
