Risky business it was for Camilla Dean to carry on a flirtation with Joseph Asad, wily Syrian and one of the most prominent of the Moslems attempting to undermine the British Mandate in Palestine. But the attractive young American girl was convinced that Asad knew the whereabouts of the escaped Osman Khali, chief symbol of the Moslem faith in its efforts to gain a firmer foothold in the Near East. Camilla was determined to learn that secret at the risk of her life and thus aid Ronald Barker, young secret agent of the British Foreign Office, who promises her that he will appear like a "Jinn out of a bottle" if she needs him. Warily she carries on her flirtation with Asad, skillfully evading his proposals of marriage until finally the impatient Syrian takes matters in his own hands, holds up the Bagdad bus on which Camilla is traveling, and carries her off to his desert encampment. In a whirlwind finish, climaxed by a terrific battle between Asad's cutthroats and the followers of Ronald Barker, the various threads of the story are tied together in a highly thrilling and convincing manner. "The Road to Bagdad" is one of the best books from the pen of a master story-teller.
